(Lake) Buena Vista (Golf) Club

This golf/country club opened November 22, 1974 and allowed snobby vacationers the chance to pretend that they belonged to an exclusive country club. It was known by a variety of names throughout the years, hence the title above. The club featured lighted tennis courts, a swimming pool and an 18 hole par-72 golf course designed with the mid-handicap player in mind. There was a Pro Shop and the restaurant was the Pompano Grill.

The Club was a formal place and men needed to wear jackets for dinner at the restaurant. Vintage wine was available and the specialty drink was the Cafe Buena Vista, made of rum, liqueur, coffee and whipped cream. Strolling musicians such as the Dixie Deltas were the featured entertainers. Food included roasted duck with orange sauce, Supreme of red snapper and Steak Diane Flambé. The Grill was also known for a dish of onion soup with melted cheese that overflowed the edges of the bowl.

Renamed the Disney Village Clubhouse in September of 1988, the former country club-like dining room became more family oriented and the dress became casual. The Pompano Grill received a new menu and the decor became a lighter cream-color with natural wood tones, ceiling fans, and fern plants. The new culinary offerings were Prime rib, chicken, New York strip steaks and filet mignon. The Clubhouse closed on March 21, 1994. The entire club was later rebuilt and remodeled to become the main building for the Disney Institute.
